I've been told a house needs to breath. Is that true?

The answer is yes and no. When it comes to moisture, the structure of the house needs to breath and equalize it's humidity with the environment around it. Not breathing, trapping moisture, can create problems like mold and rotting of materials.

Unfortunately, some builders apply this simple truth in a wrong way. They will use this truth to justify not making the house air-tight and vapor tight. If this is the objective, then no, we don't want the house to breath that way.
